Develops practitioners’ professional knowledge and expertise
‘I have learnt so much from this course...it is the best course I have ever been on.’ Children Centre nursery practitioner, Ealing

Supports evidence-based pedagogy, develops practice across the whole centre
‘The course has really provided a focus for us as a unit to reflect on teaching and learning.’Reception teacher Ealing

The project is for practitioners in Children’s Centres and other Early Years settings, including the private and voluntary sectors.

The project helps practitioners to:

  • Develop play-based learning to promote children’s talk and thinking
  • Develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of early literacy development in multilingual settings
  • Consider, discuss and try out key teaching approaches as a foundation for successful and confident language learning
  • Review current provision and develop an effective talk-rich learning environment
  • Recognise and plan for children’s individual needs through keeping case studies
  • Explore the role of parents as partners in their children’s early learning and work practically with parents to develop common understandings and approaches
  • Share and develop practice across a range of settings to gain a wider view
  • Reflect on their own practice and plan areas for development

The project includes:

  • 5 half-day taught sessions over two terms (1.30-4.30)
  • A set of 10 core books to use within individual settings
  • A set of key resources to support play-based learning
  • A school mentoring visit by the project tutor to advise/work with each project participant on an aspect of the language
    curriculum of particular interest
