Details
This major teacher and school development project has run for the past seven years. The project raises children’s achievement and enjoyment of reading through developing teachers’ knowledge of literature and its use in the primary classroom.
The Power of Reading has projects based at CLPE in London, or locally based projects at an LA venue. So far projects have been held in 19 different Local Authorities nationally. To date there have been nearly 1500 schools, 2500 teachers and over 75,000 children participating directly in the project from Cumbria to Southampton and from Bristol to Hastings.
Positive attitudes to reading
Findings from the research, funded by the Arts Council, shows that children are:
• choosing to read more often and at greater length
• keen to read challenging books
• more confident and knowledgeable in talking about books
• willing to seek out deeper meanings in texts
• showing greater enjoyment and achievement in writing.
Changes in attitude have been particularly significant for boys who have been reluctant readers and writers.
